Worship - The Creed
(This is part eleven of a running
newsletter series on worship.) Why do
we say Creeds in our worship as Lutherans? Many churches refuse to
use the Creeds because they say they only believe what the Bible says,
not what a Creed says. Our Creeds, however, are accurate
reflections of the Scriptures. Therefore when we use them, we also
confess what the Scriptures have to tell us.
There are three creeds we use in the Lutheran Church. I'll
briefly explain their orgin: The
Apostles' Creed, at least in part, dates all the way back to the first
century of the Christian Church. It gets its name not because the
Apostles' wrote it, but because it contains the Apostles' teachings as
drawn from God's Word. The Nicene
Creed dates to the 300's when the Church was fighting the false teaching
that Jesus was not God, but only man. So, the Creed says of
Jesus, "God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God."
The Athenasian Creed dates to the just after the Nicene Creed. It
was named after a man who helped write the Nicene Creed earlier that
century. It outlines the trinitarian nature of God. Its
length is the reason we do not use it very often.
Why do we use these ancient creeds in our worship in the 21st
century? Think of it this way. What the Church taught and
believed in the first centuries of the Christian Church was rightly
reflected in these Creeds from the earliest days of the Church. In
the centuries that followed, the Church began to stray from what the
Scriptures taught and what the earliest Christians believed. By
the time of the Reformation, the Church in many ways had swayed so far
from its moorings that Martin Luther recognized something had to be done
to bring the Church back into line with what the Apostles had taught in
the Scriptures. His attempt to "reform" the Church failed. In the
place of a reformed Church, the Protesters (Protestant) was
begun. When Luther and others could not bring the Church back in
line with the Apostles, they started a new Church that was in line with
all that the Apostles had taught. We
say the Apostles' Creed in worship today because we are the Church of
the Apostles and what they believed and taught. Think about what
that means when you confess the Apostles' Creed next weekend in
worship. It means we speak in unison with Christians from nearly
2000 years ago who believed just as we do. It means that you
worship in a church whose theology is the same as the Apostles.
You confess your faith with countless others who have believed the same
as you, that Jesus is indeed "God of God and Light of Light", that He is
the only Son from the Father, sent to be our Savior. It means
that what we teach, believe and confess is the timeless truth of the
Scriptures, of the Apostles, the very people who walked this earth with
our Savior. Being a Church of the
Creeds is no small thing when we realize we confess the same faith as
Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul and all others through those 2000 years
who have confessed the faith of the Apostles. See you in
church! I am Yours in Christ, Pastor Mark |
 | Monday Summer Worship

| |
Monday Worship Through August 23rd A great way to
honor the Lord's Day this summer is to worship every Sunday, just
like the rest of the year. Find a church on vacation and worship there.
If you're traveling home on a Sunday, join your Immanuel family on
Monday evenings at 6:00 p.m. to receive His gifts in Word and
Sacrament. |

topic that you would be interested in hearing as part of a sermon
series? If so, write a note on your attendance card the next time you're
in church. Pastor Bangert would like to

 | LWML Update |
| |
Immanuel's LWML to be Disbanded At the June meeting of
the Immanuel Lutheran Women's Missionary League, the members voted
to disband the organization. The main purpose of the LWML has been to
support mission work through the use of "Mite" boxes. Members who were
not present at the June meeting, and congregational members who
have been using mite boxes, are asked to turn them into the church
office by July 15 so that this money can be submitted to the zone
treasurer, and so that the local treasurer's books may be closed. Thank
you! |
 | Computer Class |
| | |
There's Still Room! Our next session for
our beginning computer class is Thursday, July 1st from 1:00-3:00 p.m.
And we still have room for YOU! We meet in
the lower level computer room. If you are interested, or need more
information, please contact Alan Wunderlich in the church office (239-4705). |
 | Postcard Request from Mr. Eckman |
| |
Can you help? Is your
family traveling over the summer? If so, send Mr. Eckman a postcard.
These postcards will be used for "Postcard Geography" next
school year. You can mail the post cards to the school address -
214 West 5th Street, Washington, MO 63090. |
 | Special Needs from the Youth |
| |
To help
expedite our travel and participation in the National Youth Gathering,
we are looking for donations from the congregation of breakfast bars,
pop-tarts, granola bars, bottled water and juice. We are very much on
the move once we get down to New Orleans and are registered. We have
found it to be very helpful to have bottled water and snack food to
send out with the youth at the beginning of the day to help them get
started and keep going throughout the course of the day. There are 30
participants going in all, so any and all donations would be
appreciated. On your next shopping trip, please consider helping the
youth! Please place all donations under the Youth tripod in the
narthex. We thank you in advance for your support! |
 | Thrivent Choice - Choice
Dollars |
| |
A New Way to Help Immanuel Lutheran
Church & School
As you may know, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is launching a
new charitable grant program and benefit of membership called Thrivent
Choice (SM). Choice Dollars (SM) will be designated to some Thrivent
Financial members when that portion of the program launches this
summer. (Thrivent Financial member eligibility will be based on
fraternal benefit society product ownership and Thrivent Financial
volunteer leadership, and helping direct Choice Dollars will be subject
to the Terms and Conditions of the Thrivent Choice SM program.) As always,
Immanuel is grateful for your consideration when you make charitable
giving plans. If you are a Thrivent Financial member who learns you will
be eligible to direct Choice Dollars SM
(watch your mail for details from Thrivent Financial this summer), we
ask you to consider Immanuel as you help direct Thrivent Financial's
charitable funds. If you find out (later this
summer) you are eligible to receive these funds (at no cost to you) that
are to be directed to a registered charity of your choice, we would ask
you to kindly consider our school's first annual campaign, "Serving in
His Steps", (We received over $9000 in Thrivent matches last year and
greatly appreciate your support) or our church's Building Fund. We
thank all of you who have supported us in the past and would
appreciated hearing from you again when Thrivent contacts you. If
you have any questions feel free to contact Alan Wunderlich in the
church office. |
